Proton VPN Review (2026): Swiss Privacy, Real Limitations

What Proton VPN is, in one paragraph

Proton VPN is a Swiss-based consumer VPN from the company behind Proton Mail. It publishes open-source apps and offers a free tier with unlimited bandwidth. The current pricing page lists Free as one simultaneous device, connecting to randomly selected servers in 10 countries. VPN Plus supports 10 simultaneous devices and adds streaming support and Secure Core. The server list reports 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries; these are provider figures, not an independent measurement.

Who this review is NOT for

If you need an exact current price comparison or a reproducible route-speed ranking, this review cannot supply it. Our October pricing-page retrieval did not render paid price amounts. Free is also not a substitute for a paid plan if you require a chosen country, streaming support, or ten simultaneous devices.

What works well

Switzerland jurisdiction

Proton identifies itself as Swiss-based and publishes a no-logs policy. Company location is one factor to consider, not a guarantee against surveillance. We do not assess Swiss law or provide country-specific legal advice in this review.

Free tier that’s genuinely free

Proton documents the following features for its free plan:

Unlimited bandwidth (no monthly data cap)
No ads
No data selling
One simultaneous device
Servers in 10 countries, randomly selected according to the current pricing page

Free can be worth considering for basic use without a payment commitment. It does not provide the paid plan’s choice of countries or documented streaming support. We are not claiming it is the only legitimate free VPN.

Open-source and audited

Proton publishes open-source apps and describes external audits. Public code lets specialists inspect implementations; it does not mean we have audited the code or that every risk has been eliminated. Read the scope and date of an audit before relying on it.

Secure Core routing (paid)

Paid plans include Secure Core, which routes traffic through an additional server before the exit location. Proton’s server page describes these servers and their routes. Extra routing is not a guarantee against targeted surveillance or a replacement for a suitable device-security plan.

Proton ecosystem

Proton VPN integrates with Proton Mail, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton Calendar under one account. If you’re already using Proton Mail (as we recommend in our Privacy Apps guide), the VPN is a natural addition.

What doesn’t work well

Free tier speed

The pricing page describes Free as “medium” speed and paid plans as “highest” speed, while the free-product page says there is no fixed speed limit. Those are different descriptions, not a measured speed cap. Performance depends on congestion and your connection; we cannot predict video-call quality from them.

Check the current server list

The previous 4,500+ servers and 90+ countries are outdated. Proton’s current server list exceeds 20,000 servers and 140 countries. Confirm the city and server type you need; headline counts don’t establish speed or suitability. Different official pages displayed different totals during our check, so use the live server list for destination planning.

Streaming results aren’t guaranteed

Proton advertises streaming support on paid plans. We have not confirmed Netflix Japan, US, or UK access on specific servers. Catalog rights and VPN blocking change; check your service’s conditions and do not treat a provider claim as a guaranteed result.

Paid plan complexity

The consumer pricing page lists Free, VPN Plus, and Proton Unlimited. VPN Plus is the relevant paid VPN-only option; Unlimited adds premium access to other Proton services. A bundle is worthwhile only if you need those other products.

Account and payment requirements

Check the current account and payment requirements before signing up. We removed the unsupported blanket claim that Proton has no cash-payment option. If minimizing account details is your priority, compare the registration process with Mullvad’s numbered accounts rather than assuming every provider works the same way.

Pricing breakdown

Checked October 5, 2026 on the pricing page. Paid price amounts did not render, so we removed the previous dollar figures rather than relabeling them as current.

The page advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee for paid plans. Read the applicable refund and payment-channel terms; cancelling renewal alone is not a refund request.
