A Madrid Pride weekend followed by a few days in Barcelona and Sitges looks like one straightforward data purchase. It often is. The question to answer first, though, is whether your existing mobile plan already covers Spain. Buying a second allowance doesn’t improve a trip if the first one meets your needs.
This guide starts there, then follows the decisions that matter for a Spain visit: country versus regional coverage, busy event days, airport transfers and the return from an evening out. It isn’t a global provider ranking. Our broader eSIM comparison covers that separate decision.
Checked October 7, 2026. We haven’t assessed these services on Spanish networks. We don’t reproduce changing prices or claim that one provider is fastest. Package terms need checking again for your departure dates, especially if you’re planning summer 2027 during the winter booking season.
Before buying: does your current plan already include Spain?
Spain is an EU member, but that fact alone doesn’t give every visitor free roaming. The Your Europe roaming guide explains the EU’s “roam like at home” arrangement for eligible service used during temporary travel within the covered area. Fair-use conditions apply. This is general consumer information, not an interpretation of your individual contract.
If you normally use an eligible EU plan, check the roaming allowance and any fair-use limit before buying more data. An unlimited domestic allowance isn’t necessarily unlimited abroad. A local prepaid product also needs its own terms checked; don’t assume every plan sold inside the EU has identical roaming features.
For a US, Canadian, Australian or UK plan, inspect your carrier’s actual Spain inclusion. Some plans or travel passes cover it; others charge separately. UK inclusion is a contract question, not something to infer from older EU travel experience. Check calls and SMS as well as data if you plan to keep your home number active.
Write down the answer in plain terms: how much data, through which dates, and what happens when it runs out? If your current plan covers the entire itinerary at an acceptable cost, using it can be simpler than managing another profile. If it doesn’t, a travel eSIM is one alternative, not an automatic necessity.
Country plan or Europe plan: sketch the whole route
For Madrid–Barcelona–Sitges, the relevant purchase is ordinarily a Spain package lasting for the whole visit. Domestic travel doesn’t inherently require a new country plan. Verify the selected product’s geographic scope rather than buying separately for each city.
A Lisbon–Madrid–Barcelona trip changes the comparison. Look at a regional Europe package alongside separate Portugal and Spain purchases. The label “Europe” is only a starting point: read the actual country list and make sure both destinations are included. Count a stopover if you’ll leave the airport and need data there.
Simsima’s Trip Packs page is another place to inspect itinerary-based options. We haven’t established that every pack includes your route or costs less than country purchases. Compare the combined allowance, activation trigger and expiry for the specific pack, not a general promise about multi-country travel.
EU roaming rules don’t turn a Spain-only travel-reseller package into a Europe-wide product. A provider can sell different regional and country products with different destination lists. If a page’s travel copy suggests onward use but the selected package doesn’t explicitly include Portugal or France, ask support before relying on it.
| Your itinerary | First option to check | What can change the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Madrid and Sitges only | Existing roaming, then a Spain plan | Validity through the final airport transfer |
| Spain and Portugal | Existing roaming or a package listing both | Shared allowance versus two separate expiries |
| Several European countries | Regional package or suitable home plan | Every stop must appear in the covered list |
| Extended stay with local calling needs | Local-carrier service | A data-only tourist product isn’t resident service |
Avoid paying for a large regional allowance just because you have one connection abroad. Equally, don’t choose a tiny country package that leaves the last several days uncovered. Dates and geography should decide before rewards do.

Madrid’s official tourism parade page describes the main march as taking place on the first Saturday in July. At our check it lists July 3, 2027. Treat that as the tourism listing checked on October 7, not confirmation of every surrounding performance, ticketed party or transport arrangement. Recheck MADO’s organizer site before non-refundable event bookings.
Pride activity in and around Chueca doesn’t mean your friends will stay at the first map pin they send. Agree on a meeting place and a time before splitting up. Choose a place you can describe without live location, preferably outside the moving crowd. Save the accommodation address and return route on each person’s phone.
A crowded event creates two distinct issues: you can use more data uploading photos, and messages can take longer to arrive. A bigger allowance addresses only the first. We haven’t measured congestion during Madrid Pride, and buying an unlimited plan isn’t a guarantee of an immediate connection in a crowd.
Download the current programme and any ticket before leaving your accommodation. Check whether the ticket must be displayed in an app or whether the organizer accepts an offline copy; a screenshot isn’t a universal substitute for a live barcode. Keep the ticket account signed in without depending on a code sent to a disabled number.
Don’t plan data validity around the parade alone. Include the arrival day, extra sightseeing and departure. If you arrive several days beforehand, installing the profile and starting its validity are important separate questions. A short allowance that expires after the march won’t help with your transfer home.
Barcelona and Sitges: save the return journey, too
For Barcelona, record the airport and terminal on your booking, then the onward route to your accommodation. “Barcelona arrival” isn’t enough detail to arrange a pickup. Save the hotel address as written by the property and keep check-in instructions outside an email attachment that still needs downloading.
Sitges adds a coastal stay or day trip to many itineraries. Plan the connection back to Barcelona using the current transport timetable for your date. Don’t assume an evening service matches the daytime frequency or that the same route works after a late event. An eSIM can load a timetable; it cannot create a departure that has already gone.
If you’re spending the summer in Sitges rather than visiting for one afternoon, include accommodation changes and beach days in your data estimate. Save specific venue addresses instead of relying on a district name or an old social-media post. Check individual opening times and event pages shortly before visiting.
For companions with different evening plans, separate data lines are often more practical than one person’s hotspot. Sharing only works while devices remain nearby and the host phone has power. Agree who holds booking details if one person goes back earlier; nobody should need to borrow another phone just to find the room.
Keep your phone out of direct sun and take a charging cable on a long day out. Data allowance, reception and battery are separate resources. If the device shuts down, an active plan is no use. Carry an offline address somewhere beyond that one screen when your return depends on it.
Coverage: ask about your stops, not “all of Spain”
Madrid and Barcelona accommodation, a Sitges beach visit and a mountain detour are different coverage questions. Ask which underlying networks the selected package supports, then investigate any stop where connectivity is essential. A national product name doesn’t prove service at every location.
Simsima’s Spain page lists Orange and Movistar. Those are provider-published network labels, not measurements by Pride Rated. Confirm the networks for the exact plan before buying. We don’t infer continuous train reception, indoor signal or unrestricted switching between them from the presence of two names.
For a rural property or mountain excursion, ask the accommodation about practical access and download directions beforehand. Coverage maps describe network availability, not a guarantee that your particular device will receive a usable signal inside the room. Underground travel and thick-walled buildings are other reasons to keep directions cached.
If remote work is essential, ask about accommodation Wi-Fi separately and arrange somewhere else to work if necessary. A travel eSIM’s 5G label doesn’t establish upload performance or a service-level commitment. Two reseller brands also aren’t necessarily independent backup if they use the same network.
Check the exact phone before choosing the allowance
Apple’s international eSIM guide explains that an iPhone must be unlocked to use another carrier. Check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock for No SIM Restrictions. Supporting eSIM and being carrier-unlocked are separate requirements.
For any device, check its exact model and purchase region against the manufacturer’s instructions. Don’t use a brand name as approval: regional variants can differ. Confirm that the phone can keep the lines you need active at the same time, particularly if your home number must receive bank verification messages.
If the phone is locked, resolve it with your carrier before departure. A travel app cannot remove that restriction. For an unlocked device without eSIM support, investigate a physical SIM if it has a suitable tray, or use an appropriate home roaming arrangement. Digital purchase isn’t a reason to replace a working phone.
Most importantly, distinguish internet access from telephone service. Check whether a selected plan includes voice or SMS; don’t assume it does. Existing internet-messaging accounts can use a data connection, but a data-only purchase doesn’t supply a Spanish number for ordinary calls or every local verification process.
Build a data budget around the days you’ll actually have
Open your phone’s mobile-data history and look at several normal days. Then add the things your Spain trip changes. A Pride weekend with video uploads has a different pattern from museum visits and messaging. A laptop sharing the line changes it again.
These are planning examples, not measured consumption or universal minimums. They assume downloads and large backups stay on Wi-Fi. Use your own history to adjust them.
| Example visit | Allowance to investigate | Main source of uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| Four days in Madrid, maps and messages | 3–5 GB | Uploading event footage |
| One week split between Barcelona and Sitges | 5–10 GB | Social feeds and video calls |
| Two weeks across Spain and another country | 10–20 GB, with both countries included | Shared laptop use and longer travel days |
Disable mobile photo backups and automatic updates before leaving. Download supported offline maps and any Spanish language resources over Wi-Fi. For Barcelona-area place names, retain the spelling in your actual booking rather than relying on an English translation you can’t match to signage.
Check usage after the first full day. If an app consumes most of the allowance in the background, change that setting before paying for a larger package. Keep some reserve for a delayed flight or altered transfer instead of aiming to exhaust the plan precisely at departure.
“Unlimited” needs its own reading. Check fair-use terms, speed reductions and hotspot allowance. Unlimited phone use doesn’t establish unlimited laptop sharing. We haven’t verified a universal tethering limit across these providers’ Spain products, so check the selected package directly.
Compare purchase pages without inventing a winner
Use the same three questions for each provider: does it fit your existing roaming and route, does its allowance last long enough, and can you install and recover it? Prices should be compared on current official pages for matching dates and needs. No performance scores are assigned here.
| Provider | Useful fit | Price | Practical strength to investigate | Limitation / verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simsima | Pre-departure Spain purchase | Check Spain checkout | Country page with allowance and validity choices | Confirm package scope before crossing a border |
| Airalo | Travelers who already use its account | Check official Spain page | Familiar purchase and plan-management process | Don’t transfer terms from another destination |
| Holafly | Travelers comparing a duration-led purchase | Check official Spain page | A separate option to assess for your trip length | Read sharing and fair-use conditions independently |
Simsima: country plans first, rewards second
Simsima’s Spain page displays allowance and validity choices and advertises 4% in SimCoins. These are points, not an upfront four-percent reduction to the payment. Read current reward rules before assigning them value. A reward cannot make an unsuitable expiry date suitable.
The page describes pre-departure installation and starting on arrival. Follow the instructions for the actual product you buy, including any installation deadline. Keep the order reference and support link offline; we haven’t assessed delivery time, support response or refund outcomes.
Useful for: a compatible, unlocked phone and a Spain itinerary that fits the selected terms. Skip the selected package if: you need a confirmed local number, unsupported onward countries or hotspot features you can’t establish. Its country page is a purchase starting point, not proof of suitability for every European trip.

Use Airalo’s official Spain page and Holafly’s official Spain page for current products. Both links are non-affiliate. We don’t copy their changing checkout totals or apply a hotspot number from another country to Spain.
An existing account can reduce setup work if you already understand its instructions. That familiarity is a practical advantage, not evidence of better Spanish reception. Check whether the chosen plan can be topped up, whether extra data extends validity, and whether another payment or renewal is automatic.
Skip any plan whose sharing limit conflicts with work needs, whose activation rule uses up days before arrival, or whose covered-country list omits an onward stop. Ask about unresolved details before paying rather than relying on the brand’s global destination count.
Install before departure; verify before leaving the terminal
Install over a stable connection following the provider’s instructions. If the QR code arrives on the phone being configured, use its supported same-device method or another screen. Don’t post the installation code publicly when asking for help.
Label the lines Home and Spain data. Find the validity trigger before enabling the new line. On arrival, select the travel line for mobile data. Keep home-line data roaming off if it isn’t your intended service, and disable automatic data switching where it can draw on the home allowance. Follow separate provider instructions for roaming on the travel line.
Keeping your home number active can still bring call or messaging charges. Ask the home carrier about those before traveling; switching off data roaming doesn’t answer every billing question. If you don’t need the line abroad, turning it off is simpler.
Before leaving the terminal, switch Wi-Fi off briefly and open a fresh webpage. A cached map or signal icon doesn’t establish working data. If the test succeeds, send your arrival message and check the data-line selection again. If it fails, use verified airport Wi-Fi or your offline route rather than buying a second plan immediately.
If data stops working during the trip
Check the selected line, remaining allowance and validity first. Follow the provider’s roaming and APN instructions; don’t improvise settings from another brand. Restart or briefly toggle airplane mode as directed. Don’t delete the eSIM as a first step, because reinstallation can require support or a replacement profile.
Contact official support with the order reference and relevant settings, leaving passwords and payment details out of screenshots. If the problem happens only in one building or crowd, move to a suitable place and retry before assuming the entire plan has failed. For an urgent transfer, use the route you’ve already saved.
At Pride or a meetup, protect other people’s privacy. Ask before posting identifiable photos, share live location only with intended recipients and review lock-screen message previews. An eSIM isn’t an anonymity service, and attendance at an LGBTQ+ event isn’t consent to be tagged.
Your Spain departure checklist
Confirm existing roaming before adding another purchase. Match the plan to every country and every day, with enough data left for the return. Save the Madrid event information, Barcelona arrival details and Sitges evening transport separately; they answer different parts of the itinerary.
If Simsima’s Spain package meets those checks, inspect the current terms below. If your existing plan already works, keep it. For onward Lisbon or Porto travel, read our Portugal eSIM guide before assuming the Spain purchase covers both sides of the border.
